The garden has a collection of fruit trees, cacti, roses, medicinal herbs, walnuts, and attractive grasses. The majority of plants feature their botanic and colloquial names. Burbank developed and constructed the greenhouse in the garden in 1889; his burial is adjacent, beneath a Cedar of Lebanon.

History

Luther Burbank is a resident of Santa Rosa for over 50 years, where he completed the majority of his life’s work. Burbank lived in the Greek Revival mansion of the park from 1884 to 1906 before moving across Tupper Street to a residence that is already non-existing. His wife, Elizabeth Burbank returned to the residence after Burbank’s death in 1926, where she remained until her death in 1977.

A native of Massachusetts, Luther Burbank was a nationally recognized figure who created numerous new varieties of plants. He is credited for introducing more than 250 new fruit types, including a considerable number of commonly cultivated plum cultivars. In 1964, a part of the property was designated as a National Historic Landmark. The site appears on the official list of Santa Rosa historic landmarks and the Sonoma County Historical Society’s list of historic sites.
