Railroad Square Historic District is the old town and historic center of Santa Rosa. Originally utilized as warehouses, canneries, macaroni factories, breweries, and other rail-supporting businesses, these buildings have been converted into specialty stores, restaurants, and office space. The exposed brick walls and cement floors testify to a bygone era and lend a unique atmosphere and historic charm to the neighborhood.
It was in 1979 when the Railroad Square Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its efforts to restore and preserve the architectural buildings that exemplify the railroad’s impact on a town. Several films, including Alfred Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt and Steve Martin’s Cheaper by the Dozen, were filmed near the train depot due to the square’s allure.
The Railroad Square Association continues to work to promote and enhance the historic district with the purpose of conserving the historic feeling of the place (real, comfortable, charming, and human scale) and producing a commercial vitality that marked the neighborhood over 100 years ago!
Railroad Square Historic District offers an authentic old-town atmosphere and has become Santa Rosa’s Restaurant and Antique Row as well as the first stop for tourists traveling to Sonoma County to enjoy Wine Country. The surrounding streets include Third, Davis, Wilson, Sixth, and Santa Rosa Creek.
Recently, Railroad Square has established itself as the tourism center of Sonoma County’s Redwood Empire and Wine Country, with 325 bedrooms spread over three hotels in the district: the 1907-built Hotel La Rose, the Courtyard Marriott, and the Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel & Spa. The free Railroad Square Music Festival has been held here since June 2015.
Several historic buildings, particularly those along Fourth Street, house restaurants and other retail establishments in Santa Rosa’s downtown Railroad Square district.
Historic Railroad Square offers guests a family-friendly, walkable environment with foreign restaurants, vintage shops, award-winning theaters, and more. The neighborhood is surrounded by world-class wineries and is the epicenter of the craft beer sector.
