Railroad Square Historic District is the old town and historic center of Santa Rosa. Originally utilized as warehouses, canneries, macaroni factories, breweries, and other rail-supporting businesses, these buildings have been converted into specialty stores, restaurants, and office space. The exposed brick walls and cement floors testify to a bygone era and lend a unique atmosphere and historic charm to the neighborhood.

It was in 1979 when the Railroad Square Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its efforts to restore and preserve the architectural buildings that exemplify the railroad’s impact on a town. Several films, including Alfred Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt and Steve Martin’s Cheaper by the Dozen, were filmed near the train depot due to the square’s allure.
The Railroad Square Association continues to work to promote and enhance the historic district with the purpose of conserving the historic feeling of the place (real, comfortable, charming, and human scale) and producing a commercial vitality that marked the neighborhood over 100 years ago!
